The One Question That Can Change Your Life

Life often feels overwhelmingly busy, making it hard to keep things in perspective. I plan to “walk” through life, but I end up running. Running to appointments, finishing tasks, and tackling my endless to-do list. Each day, the list of tasks and milestones grows longer. At the end of the day, I ask myself, “Dorice, did you do everything on the list?” The answer is often disappointing: no. This leads to frustration, disappointment, and sometimes even self-blame.

Can you relate? Do you feel like you’re running around like a chicken with its head cut off? It’s a common experience. When I feel like that chicken, I stop. I realize I need to keep my head on straight—literally and figuratively. This is my wake-up call.

What’s Important Now? A Perspective Shift

That’s when I think about WIN, an acronym for: What’s Important Now? As soon as I internalize this question, I immediately calm down. There will always be tasks to complete, but what’s the long game here? Do we want to keep feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and guilty for not completing our lists?

Jews around the world are currently reading in synagogues about the concept of Jubilee. It involves letting the land rest every seven years, and then again in the 50th year. This ancient wisdom can guide us today. When do you allow yourself to rest and rejuvenate? Personal development occurs when we focus our energies in the right place.

The simple question—What’s Important Now?—puts life into perspective.

2 Actionable Steps For You:

1️⃣ Daily Reflection: At the end of each day, take five minutes to ask yourself, “What’s Important Now?” Write down your thoughts and prioritize the top three tasks for the next day that align with your long-term goals.

2️⃣ Scheduled Breaks: Implement a mini “Jubilee” into your routine. Set aside a specific time each week to rest and rejuvenate, free from the pressure of your to-do list. Use this time to recharge and reflect on your priorities.
