How Do You Grow to Believe in Yourself?

When I came to America, I had $600, an accent, a suitcase, and a whole lot of uncertainty. What I didn’t have was a clear roadmap. But I had a spark. A whisper inside that said, “Try.”

Years later, I felt that same whisper when I left a 30-year career in education. A steady paycheck. A predictable path. I stepped away—not because I had all the answers—but because I had outgrown the space I was in.
And that’s where belief starts. Not with certainty—but with courage.
People often ask me: How do you grow into believing in yourself?
Here’s what I’ve learned—from my own journey and from helping others find their inner champion:

1. Start with Courage, Not Confidence
When I walked away from the familiar, I didn’t feel fearless. I felt nervous. But I took action anyway. That’s the key—confidence doesn’t come first. Courage is the seed. Confidence is the flower.

2. Stack the Small Wins
After leaving my job, I said yes to opportunities I wasn’t “ready” for. I showed up. I spoke. I coached. And each time, I saw people transform. And I thought—Maybe I can do this. Those wins built a ladder I could climb.
Ask yourself: What’s one small thing I can say yes to today that stretches me, even just a little?

3. Reframe Your Story
I could’ve told myself: You’re walking away from security. But instead, I said: You’re stepping into possibility. The stories we tell ourselves shape the futures we believe we deserve.
Instead of asking, What if I fail? try asking, What if this works?

4. Talk to Yourself Like You’d Talk to a Friend
When doubt creeps in—and it always does—I learned to quiet the inner critic and turn up the inner coach. Self-belief grows when you’re kind to yourself, especially in tough moments.
Try this: Next time you hear the voice of “not enough,” speak back with truth and compassion.

5. Surround Yourself With People Who See You
I didn’t get here alone. People reflected my strengths back to me before I fully saw them myself. A mentor, a friend, a coach—it only takes one person to hold up a mirror and say, “You’ve got something special.”
Who’s in your corner? And whose corner are you standing in?

6. Connect to a Purpose Bigger Than You
What keeps me going isn’t just that I love speaking. It’s that I believe people need hope. They need joy. They need tools to rise above the chaos and live as their best selves. That why fuels me—even when the how feels hard. What fuels YOU?
