Last month I spent two weeks with my grandkids while my daughter and her husband, both working in the medical field, had to be in the clinic. My husband and I became the live-in babysitters—handling everything a 3 year old and a 10 month old need!
Let me tell you, it was exhausting. But it was also one of the most heartwarming, meaningful experiences.
One night, my granddaughter and I were snuggled up on her bed. I started telling her stories about her mom when she was her age. I shared how her mom used to love taking care of her little brother. I can still remember how loyal and close they were. My granddaughter giggled as she imagined her mom as a little girl caring for her brother, just as she does now for her little sister.
Then, we shifted to talking about how her parents met. I pulled out some videos from their wedding—dancing, laughing, the whole celebration—and her curiosity exploded. “Was I there? Was I there?” she kept asking.
I smiled and said, “You were! You were the very beginning thought in your mom’s tummy. She didn’t know you yet, but you were already a part of her dreams.” Her eyes lit up, and for a moment, it felt like she understood the depth of that connection.
It reminded me of a beautiful Jewish teaching—that every soul was present at Mount Sinai when we received the Torah. That moment wasn’t just about those who were physically there; it was about all of us—past, present, and future—standing together.
Legacy, in its purest form, is about the stories, the values, and the love that connect us through generations.
Sharing those moments with my granddaughter made me realize how much our stories matter. They don’t have to be big or profound—they just need to be real. The stories we tell about laughter, struggles, joy, and love become the memories that live on in the hearts of future generations.
So, here’s my challenge to you: Take a moment this week to share a story with someone you love. It doesn’t have to be perfect—just honest.
Whether it’s a memory that makes you laugh or one that reminds you why family matters, I promise it will leave an impression.
Because in the end, those small stories are what build a legacy.
What story will you share today?
