Honor Your Emotions
It Is All About Honor: Honor the Hard Stuff. Then Rise.
But when I really sat with it—85 to 95%? That hit differently.
How often do we let our reactions—not our values—shape the choices we make? How often do we let emotion steer the wheel, only to realize later that we weren’t actually living by what we care about most?
One of my clients told me, “Joy is my top value.” When I asked, “When was the last time you did something joyful?”—they were silent.
Another said, “Family is my highest priority,” but they had just canceled a family vacation because of work pressure.
It’s not hypocrisy.
It’s humanity.
The Honor Step Begins Here
We all experience moments when our reactions override our clarity. We know what matters… but we don’t always act on it.
So here’s the practice I invite you into this week:
🌱 Feel your feelings. But don’t let them drive the bus.
Honor your emotions—even the hard ones—but also pause to ask:
What value do I want to lead with right now?
Authenticity Isn’t Always What You Think
I once coached a teenage boy who proudly told me, “I’m just being my authentic self,” after describing his rude, disruptive behavior at home and school.
I smiled. Not because I dismissed his words—but because I knew how many adults walk around with that same belief.
But here’s the truth I wish more people knew:
Authenticity isn’t about acting on every emotion.
It’s about having the emotional awareness to recognize your reactions, then honor your emotions without letting them define your identity.
Authenticity means remembering who you were at your origin—your makor (מקור). In Hebrew, the word mekoree means authentic—and it shares its root with makor, which means origin.
You were born with joy.
You were born with kindness, curiosity, innocence.
You were born with the capacity to love, to learn, and to lead.
Over time, life layers on pain, stress, and defensiveness—and sometimes, we mistake those automatic, reactive behaviors for “who we are.”
Honor is the invitation to pause.
To reflect.
To peel back the layers and reconnect with your authentic self.
To honor your emotions, yes—but not be ruled by them.
That’s when we rise.
Try this today
Here are three practical ways to honor your emotions without letting them run the show:
1. Turn “Should” into “Could”
Saying “you should” can sound like blame. Try “you could” instead—it invites possibility and compassion, especially when you're feeling reactive.
2. Replace “Why” with “What”
“Why did you do that?” often sounds like an accusation. Try: “What were you hoping would happen?” It opens space for emotional awareness and insight.
3. Ask: What Now?
Instead of ruminating or regretting, bring yourself back to choice: What’s the next step I can take that reflects my values and helps me honor my emotions with intention?
A Personal Note on Honor
I thought, “If I just stay upbeat, I’ll be fine.”
But healing doesn’t come from skipping over pain. It comes from honoring it—gently, honestly—and still choosing to rise.
You get to feel what you feel.
You also get to choose how you move forward.
That’s the work of a champion.
