Navigating Narrow Seasons in Life: What a Walk Through an Alley Can Teach Us About Resilience

Sometimes the most meaningful leadership lessons appear when we least expect them.

During a recent visit to Victoria, British Columbia, I found myself walking through a narrow alleyway. The walls were close together, the space felt confined, and there wasn’t much to admire along the way. My attention naturally shifted to what was immediately in front of me because there wasn’t much else to see.

That experience stayed with me because it coincided with Tisha B’Av, a day in Jewish tradition dedicated to remembering periods of great loss and hardship throughout Jewish history. While deeply rooted in faith and remembrance, the day also offers a universal reminder that difficult seasons are part of every human journey.

Dorice in the Alley. Navigating Narrow Seasons in Life: Finding Hope One Step at a Time

The alley became more than a passageway. It became a metaphor for the seasons in life when our world feels smaller than usual.

When Life Feels Narrow

Most of us experience moments when life feels as though it has narrowed.

A career setback, a health challenge, the loss of someone we love, uncertainty about the future, or a difficult leadership decision can leave us feeling as though our options have disappeared. Instead of seeing possibility, we see obstacles. Instead of looking ahead, we focus only on what is immediately in front of us.

These seasons are uncomfortable because they challenge our sense of certainty. We want answers, solutions, and reassurance that everything will work out. Yet life rarely provides the full picture while we are still walking through the difficult part of the journey.

The challenge is not simply enduring the season. The challenge is resisting the temptation to believe that the season will last forever.

Reflection

A narrow season may describe your current circumstances, but it does not define your future.

What the Alley Revealed

As I continued walking, something became increasingly clear.

The alley eventually opened.

I didn’t have to force it to happen, and I didn’t need to know what was waiting around the corner. My responsibility was simply to keep moving forward.

That realization applies far beyond a walk through a historic city.

Life often unfolds the same way. We rarely see the entire path ahead, yet each step reveals a little more than the one before it. Progress doesn’t always arrive through dramatic breakthroughs. More often, it comes through quiet consistency and the willingness to take the next step, even when the destination remains uncertain.

A Different Perspective on Resilience

Resilience is often misunderstood. Many people imagine resilience as extraordinary strength or the ability to remain unaffected by hardship.

In reality, resilience is much more human than that.

It allows us to acknowledge disappointment without losing hope. It gives us permission to feel grief while continuing to move forward. It reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear but the decision to keep going despite it.

The goal is not to ignore difficult emotions. The goal is to avoid becoming trapped by them.

Mental Fitness During Difficult Seasons

One of the principles I often teach through Positive Intelligence® is that our minds naturally react to pressure by focusing on threats, limitations, and worst-case scenarios. Those reactions are understandable, but they are not always helpful.

Mental fitness invites us to pause before reacting and to become curious instead of fearful. Rather than asking, “Why is this happening to me?” we begin asking, “What is the next wise step I can take?”

That small shift changes our relationship with the challenge. We stop waiting for perfect clarity and begin making meaningful progress one decision at a time.

Practices That Help During Narrow Seasons

When life feels uncertain, simple practices often have the greatest impact.

  • Accept that not every season will feel easy.
  • Focus on today’s next step rather than the entire journey.
  • Stay connected to people who encourage and support you.
  • Make space to reflect before reacting.
  • Remember that every difficult season eventually gives way to new possibilities.

These practices won’t remove every obstacle, but they help us walk through those obstacles with greater confidence and peace.

Looking Beyond the Alley

By the time I reached the end of the alley, the view had completely changed. The space widened, the light looked different, and what once felt confining became part of the journey rather than the destination.

Life has a way of doing the same.

The seasons that challenge us often become the seasons that shape us. They teach patience, deepen compassion, strengthen resilience, and remind us that growth rarely happens in wide-open spaces. More often, it begins in the places where we feel stretched, uncertain, and called to keep moving despite not having all the answers.

If your life feels a little like that alley today, remember that your current surroundings are not your final destination. Keep taking the next step. Trust that the path will eventually widen, and allow yourself to believe that what lies ahead may be more beautiful than you can presently imagine.

Summary: A Daily Practice for Difficult Transits

If your career, your leadership journey, or your personal life feels restricted right now, give yourself permission to process the reality of the moment. Feel the feelings completely, yet actively choose your response:

  • Choose Courage: Stand tall even when the walls press closer.

  • Choose Hope: Remember that the landscape will change.

  • Choose Motion: Keep moving forward, one interaction and one day at a time.

The path you are walking may be narrow, but it is indisputably leading somewhere meaningful.
