The Power of Hope

What If a Better Possibility Is Just One Thought Away?

What One Word Can Do

“I chose hope because without hope, we cannot dream, we cannot navigate our lives, and we cannot love.” —Dorice Horenstein, Choose to Be Your Own Champion
Several years ago, I was invited to choose one intentional word to carry into the New Year. You’ve probably done something similar—at a retreat, in a journaling group, or perhaps as a quiet personal tradition.

Words floated through my mind: Growth. Courage. Peace. Creativity.
But the word I ultimately chose—especially during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic—was hope.

Not because everything felt light or clear.
But because without hope, nothing else can grow.

Without hope, we lose the ability to dream.
To love.
To imagine.
To move.

Hope doesn’t guarantee a perfect outcome.
But it opens the door to one.

Hope Is a Mental Muscle

I often say: “Hope is the antithesis of fear.”

Where fear says, “This will never work,”
Hope asks, “But… what if it could?”

Where fear tightens its grip to protect what is,
Hope gently expands the mind toward what might be.

I think about the conflict I had with my supervisor years ago—a painful, frustrating experience that nearly pushed me to resign.
I was ready to walk away.
But something inside said, Not yet. Try again. Stay open.

That something was hope.

And because of it, I stayed—and ultimately transformed the working relationship into something meaningful and enduring.

That moment taught me this: Hope is not soft. The power of hope is strength in disguise.

Shift Your Perspective: Nekudat Mabat

In Hebrew, the word for perspective is nekudat mabat (נקודת מבט)—literally, “a point of view.”

Think of yourself sitting in a grand theater.
Do you see the same show from every seat? No. The angle matters.

Sometimes, when we’re stuck in disappointment or disillusionment, the show hasn’t changed—only our seat has.

Shifting your perspective is an invitation to step into the Openness step of the CHOOSE framework.
And hope is the flashlight you use when the lights dim around you.

Open to Possibility, Even in Uncertainty

One of my greatest teachers, Viktor Frankl—a Holocaust survivor and author of Man’s Search for Meaning—wrote:
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”
Hope, even in the darkest places, allows us to reimagine what life can still offer.
It’s not about naïve positivity.
It’s about powerful possibility.

Hope Is a Practice—Not a Feeling

Dr. James Gills, a six-time Double Ironman triathlon finisher, once said:
“Don’t listen to yourself. Talk to yourself.”

That’s hope in action.

Hope isn’t a one-time declaration. It’s a mental practice. A self-directed whisper:

  • “I’m open to the unexpected good.”
  • “I choose to see this differently.”
  • “I believe there’s more ahead than behind.”
That kind of talk rewires the brain. Literally.

Positive psychology shows us that hopeful thoughts activate endorphins, improve well-being, and increase resilience.

This isn’t just inspiration—it’s neuroscience.
That’s the real power of hope.

A Question for You - What’s Your Next Step?

Where in your life do you need to open the door—just a little wider?

  • A relationship that’s gone quiet?
  • A dream that feels buried?
  • A transition that feels more like an ending than a beginning?

What becomes possible when you choose to stay open?

Hope doesn’t demand you have the whole path.
Just the next step.
