The Morning Scroll and the Game of Life:
How to Focus on What's Important Now
My client—let’s call her Beth—would wake up every morning and, before her feet even touched the floor, start scrolling through social media.
Fifteen minutes. Twenty. Sometimes longer.
By the time she put the phone down, her mind was already crowded—with everyone else’s priorities, opinions, and highlight reels.
Sound familiar?
She told me she wanted to feel more grounded, more intentional, but she was exhausted—emotionally and mentally. As a health professional, she spends her days caring for others. By evening, she had nothing left to give herself. And the exhaustion continues into the morning.
Do You Want to Win the Game of Life?
Then I followed with: “What are the rules of that game?”
She paused. “Living with purpose. Enjoying life. Finding pleasure in it—and learning something along the way.”
A beautiful answer. But it led us to the real insight of our conversation.
What Does It Mean to WIN?
We move fast, react quickly, and measure progress by productivity, not by presence.
So I shared what “winning” truly means:
W.I.N. = What’s Important Now.
In the language of mental fitness, it’s the ability to shift from autopilot to awareness. To catch ourselves in that split second between reaction and choice—and ask, What’s important right now?
How “What’s Important Now” Changes Everything
Next, she stretched for five minutes before coffee.
Finally, she chose her presence before her notifications. And over time, those small acts of awareness began to reshape something deeper: her self-story.
She started seeing herself as someone who deserves care, rest, and renewal—not just someone who gives endlessly to others.
Because when we act from what’s important now, we live from alignment, not exhaustion.
The Game of Life Is About Presence, Not Speed
The game of life is not about speed; it’s about presence.
It’s not about checking boxes; it’s about choosing meaning.
And we win not by doing more, but by choosing wisely what matters in this very moment.
So, before you pick up your phone tomorrow morning, pause.
Take a breath.
Ask yourself: What’s Important Now?
